Red Wizards of Thay

red_wot.jpg A sect of magic users known for their red robes and shaved, tattooed heads, the Red Wizards have had their hand in many dealings across the Realms.

Ancient History

During their height of power, the Red Wizards were the notorious and nefarious spellcasting ruling class of the inhospitable but well-inhabited realms of Thay. Slavers, demonologists, and magical experimenters, the Red Wizards were much feared by most of Faerûn. They constantly schemed to bring down their neighboring nations of Rashemen, where they were thwarted by the equally famed magicians the Witches of Rashemen, Aglarond, where they were turned back by the Simbul of the Seven Sisters, and Mulhorand, where the people of Thay first emigrated from.

Recent History

The leaders of the Red Wizards, and of Thay, were the eight zulkirs, each for a different school of magic. Chief amongst these, and, indeed, among all Red Wizards was Szass Tam, a powerful archmage and feared lich. During the Spellplague, Szass Tam slew the other zulkirs and named himself leader of the newly renamed Red Wizards and of the realm of Thay.

Since Szass Tam’s takeover, the Red Wizards have transformed enormously, becoming a loosely organized chain of merchant enclaves who specialized in procuring magical items. These magic item dealers were welcomed in town and castle across all of Faerûn and as magic flowed out of Thay, information flowed in.

During the Sundering, the Red Wizards suddenly dropped the act in Western Faerûn, allying themselves with the Cult of the Dragon and other powers to raid elemental nodes, gain the favor of ancient dragons, and otherwise gain access to new and ancient sources of powerful magic.

What plans they have for their new-found power are yet unknown.
