Murder in Baldur's Gate

The story so far . . .

The Dead Three was the collective name given to Bane, Bhaal & Myrkul. Originally, they were powerful mortal adventurers who sought the path to godhood, known at first as the Dark Three. They found it in the form of Jergal, who acquiesced to their demands as he was tiring of his life as god of the dead. He gave up his portfolios to the three of them, apotheosizing them in the process. Bane ruled tyranny and strife, Bhaal became lord of murder & Myrkul, the dead.

During the Time of Troubles, when the gods were forced to walk Faerûn, Bhaal was slain, on Eleint 16, by the upstart mortal Cyric using the avatar of Mask, a sword named Godsbane, who then stole Bhaal’s divinity and portfolio elements. However, Bhaal foresaw his death and impregnated many mortal women – creating his heirs, the Bhaalspawn. The Bhaalspawn were involved in a series of conflicts along the Sword Coast, with one standing above the others and ultimately foiling Bhaal’s plan to return through his children.

This last Bhaalspawn, Abdel Adrian, resisted the murderous impulses caused by his lineage and became a famed and beloved figure in the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Of all the dead deities of Abeir-Toril, Bhaal most likely has the most scattered cultists, who believe the god of murder will return from the dead and reward them for their devotion.

And from where does a god draw his power, but Belief?

Baldur’s Gate is a metropolis and city-state on the Sword Coast and Western Heartlands border, on the north bank of the river Chionthar about twenty miles east from its mouth on the Sea of Swords. It is far to the south of Waterdeep and north of the country of Amn, and is located along the well-traveled Coast Way road. A person from Baldur’s Gate is known as a Baldurian.

This wealthy port metropolis, whose population, according to many accounts, exceeds that of Waterdeep, is an important merchant city on the Sword Coast. Its strong watch and the presence of the powerful Flaming Fists mercenary company keeps the city generally peaceful and safe.
